Online gambling involves betting on games of chance or skill for money using a computer, tablet or mobile device with an internet connection. It is available from a range of websites, some operated by state-backed lotteries and others by casinos, racetracks, and other licensed gambling operators. It can also include sports wagering, fantasy sports, keno, and casino games such as roulette and poker. Many people find it easier to gamble on a computer than in a real casino, and some enjoy the privacy of playing online.

Some forms of online gambling are legal in all states, while other types are illegal only in certain jurisdictions. In the United States, the Department of Justice and Congress have been exploring whether or not to impose new regulations on gambling sites that accept credit card bets. The first online gambling site opened in the late 1990s, and it quickly became a popular form of entertainment.

The majority of online gambling is done via a computer, tablet or smartphone. To play, the user must create an account on a gambling website and provide some personal information such as name, address, date of birth and email address. Some online casinos require players to register with a payment method such as PayPal before they can begin playing. The process usually takes a few minutes, and the player must then choose a game to play. Some websites offer welcome bonuses for new customers, which can include free chips or bets.

Although there are many benefits of gambling online, it can be addictive and lead to a variety of problems. There are some signs that a person may be at risk of developing a problem, such as a change in behavior or a sudden increase in gambling activity. However, it is important to remember that the problem is treatable and, with the right support, a person can recover from a gambling addiction.

If you know or suspect that someone you love is addicted to online gambling, it is important to discuss it in a non-judgemental way. Try to help them find ways to cope and remind them that they can always seek professional help if necessary. In addition, you can try to encourage them to seek treatment and support for their gambling addiction. Ultimately, though, it is up to the individual to take control of their gambling and to make the decision to recover. It is important for parents and other trusted adults to be aware of the dangers of online gambling, and to try to educate children and young people about the risks and the dangers of putting money on the line. It is also important to try and prevent them from becoming addicted in the first place. The webinar below, presented by broadcaster and online safety advocate Myleene Klass, is designed to do just that. It has been developed in partnership with Heather Cardwell, a practising online safety lead and CE-OP trained trainer. Click here for the full webinar and to download the slides.
